1485 – 1509 Henry VII – Loxwood in the Tudor period

Introduction

The Tudors brought peace to England after 150 years of continuous wars. Henry VII was King of England and Lord of Ireland for 24 years and came to throne when he was 28 years old. Henry’s mother was 13 years old when she gave birth to him and his father died 3 months before he was born.

King Henry is known for successfully ending the War of the Roses between the houses of Lancaster and York and for founding the Tudor dynasty. When Henry came to the throne the royal exchequer was effectively bankrupt.
During his reign Henry only appointed two Lord High Treasurers and this helped provide stability and over time the royal exchequer greatly improved. They ruthlessly improved the collection of taxes from all sections of society including nobility and the introduction of tariffs on imports helped protect home industries.
