House of Plantagenet

1154 – 1485

The Plantagenet period was dominated by three major conflicts at home and abroad, with attempts to create a British empire, conflicts between England and France and the beginning of the civil feuding known as the War of the Roses. The period also saw the development of new social institutions and a distinctive English culture. Parliament emerged and grew, culture began to flourish, the architectural style of the Normans gave way to the Gothic, architecture and the universities of Oxford and Cambridge had their origins in this period and this period also saw the first record of Loxwood in 1248.
