Alameda & Hilltop Cottage, Hilltop Stores, Cherry Villa, Cherry Cottage


  • The picture shows John Elliott and his wife Kate standing in the doorway of Hilltop stores in 1909.
  • The Cottage is timber framed built as a single dwelling around c1620 and divided into two cottages in recent times.
  • in the 17th century, the cottage was reputed to have been an Inn, one of the earliest in Sussex, and this may have been where stagecoaches stopped on the ancient drove road, because there was an ancient ‘mounting stone’ at the front.
  • Hilltop Stores, also known as Shop House & The Stores, was a Grocery shop  for 110 years and the first General Post Office opened here in the 1870’s.
  • By 1881 John Elliott was the owner and he ran the business for 40 years, and then Mr & Mrs Harris, continued for the next 25 years.
  • The Stores were acquired by the Alyward & Smith in the 1940’s and it then became Loxwood Antiques.
  • Next door is Cherry Cottage which was constructed in c1900 and Cherry Villa which was constructed c1625 – 1645.
